Nominating Petitions for 2019 Elected Positions
The following positions will be up for election in 2019:
- Council Member - 3 positions, 4 year terms
- Council Member - 1 positions, 2 year term
Nominating petitions may be picked up at the City Clerk's office, 200 N. First Street. You must be a resident of the City of Brighton for at least two years, not in default to the City, and a registered voter to qualify. Deadline to file petitions is April 23, 2019 at 4:00 pm.
Current terms expire November 10, 2019.
Registering to Vote
If you have recently moved to the City of Brighton, you must register to vote. The most convenient way to complete this process is at the City Clerk's Office located at 200 N. First Street. If you were previously registered in the State of Michigan, your voter registration can be updated in our office and you will automatically receive an address change sticker for your driver’s license within 30 days; no need to visit the Secretary of State's office. You may also register on line through the Michigan Secretary of State's or use the mail in form provided here
NOTE: You will be required to vote in person the first time if you register to vote using the mail in form and have never voted in the State of Michigan before. Please register to vote in person if you need an absentee ballot.
Bring Your Picture Identification to the Polls
Voters are required to present picture identification as part of the application to vote process. The Election Inspector will check the photo and name appearing on the identification to verify the voter’s identity. Acceptable forms of picture identification are:
- Michigan driver's license or Michigan personal identification card
- Driver's license or personal identification card issued by another state
- Federal or state government-issued photo identification
- U.S. passport
- Military identification card with photo
- Student identification with photo (from a high school or an accredited institution of higher education)
- Tribal identification card with photo
Voters who do not have acceptable picture identification or are not in possession of picture identification must sign an affidavit prior to voting.
Permanent Absentee Voter List
Registered voters can be placed on the City of Brighton's Permanent Absentee Voter List. Please contact the City Clerk. Once you are added to the list, you will automatically receive an application for an Absentee Ballot approximately six weeks prior to each election.
